Project Description

Gasenyi School serves over 1,200 students but lacks upper secondary infrastructure, causing 60–75% of learners (especially girls) to drop out after Senior 3 due to distance, cost, and safety concerns. This interrupts learning pathways, limits access to higher education, and undermines Rwanda's 12-Year Basic Education policy. The project will expand the school by constructing Senior 4–6 classrooms, enabling students to complete secondary education within their own community. Magic Foundation will contribute USD 45,000 to construct and equip the classrooms in line with national education standards. The school and community will contribute land, furniture, laboratories, girls' rooms, and student welfare facilities to ensure full functionality and sustainability. This joint intervention will significantly improve long-term educational outcomes in Rwanda.

Community Impact

The project will enable students to complete upper secondary education within their community, reducing dropout rates and improving retention, particularly for girls. By eliminating long-distance travel, it will enhance girls' safety and reduce risks of early marriage and household labor. School-led behavioral change workshops and arts-based activities will engage parents and students, promoting positive attitudes toward education and girls' participation. Together, these outcomes will strengthen local skills, social cohesion, and long-term community resilience in Kirehe District.
